Ολοκλήρωση εκπαιδευτικού εργαστηρίου «Εισαγωγή στην Ενάλια Αρχαιολογία» και ενός Secondment στον τομέα της Ενάλιας Έρευνας

Educational Field Workshop “Introduction to Underwater Archaeology” and one Secondment in the field of Underwater Research.

From 23–30 October 2025, the Hellenic Institute of Maritime Archaeology (H.I.M.A.) successfully delivered the Educational Field Workshop “Introduction to Underwater Archaeology,” offering participants a hands-on introduction to underwater cultural heritage research. The programme gathered 23 participants, combining theoretical sessions, practical exercises and fieldwork.

The workshop aimed to familiarise scientists in the field of underwater archaeology and oceanography, professional and commercial divers, and non-divers with the principles, tools, and methodologies of underwater archaeology research. Training included introductory modules on maritime archaeology, shipbuilding, oceanography, documentation methods, innovative technologies, ancient ports, conservation practices, and heritage protection frameworks.

Theoretical sessions were held at Odyssey Eco Farm Glamping in Galatas Troizinia, while practical exercises took place along the coast of Modi islet, at the ongoing excavation site of the Mycenaean shipwreck studied by H.I.M.A. since 2009. Participants engaged in sea-level activities, survey simulations, and supervised dives, applying the skills acquired in class.

The programme also highlighted the role of BCThubs and R&I solutions in enhancing underwater archaeological research. This intensive training week strengthened participants’ understanding of underwater cultural heritage and underscored the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and responsible research practices in safeguarding submerged heritage sites.

Moreover, in the framework of the project, a secondment also took place. Elena Tilegrafou, executive from Atlntis Consulting and archaeologist, was hosted by HIMA, enabling the organisation to actively participate in the workshop and benefit from direct knowledge exchange. Through this secondment, new insights, methodologies, and practical experience in underwater cultural research were gained, further strengthening institutional capacity for designing and implementing cross-sectoral initiatives. The secondment also fostered new partnerships within the cultural and research ecosystem.

During the workshop, Atlantis also presented videos from the beta-version of the upcoming VR experience currently being developed within the framework of the BCThubs project, giving participants an early insight into the upcoming interactive tools and digital applications. In addition to this preview, Atlantis delivered a dedicated showcase of the Christoforos shipwreck VR dry-diving experience. All participants had the opportunity to experience the VR system themselves. This hands-on interaction further enhanced the visibility, relevance, and expected impact of the BCTHubs project, showcasing how emerging digital tools can enrich Underwater Cultural Heritage training and outreach.
