Atlantis Consulting at IKUWA 8 – the International Congress for Underwater Archaeology (Ostend, Belgium – 16 October 2025)

Atlantis Consulting had the honor of actively participating in IKUWA 8, one of the most important international conferences on Underwater Cultural Heritage.

Bringing together more than 400 experts from 50 countries, IKUWA 8 is one of the world’s leading events dedicated to Underwater Cultural Heritage. Held this year in Ostend, Belgium and recognized as an official action of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, the congress brought together archaeologists, researchers, and heritage policymakers to explore the richness of our “blue heritage” and the future of its sustainable protection. Co-organized by major Flemish, Belgian, and European heritage institutions with support from international partners, IKUWA 8 adopted the theme “Telling the Exciting Tales of Our Past,” highlighting the powerful cultural narratives hidden beneath the seas and their importance for research, preservation, and sustainable development.

At the Congress, Atlantis Consulting participated with 2 contributions demonstrating our long-standing commitment to Underwater Cultural Heritage and sustainable development. Our representative, Anastasia Fourkiotou, presented “Twenty Years Lessons Learned of Accessible Underwater Cultural Heritage Sites”, highlighting our insights in making UCH sites accessible and sustainably managed through immersive technologies and effective protection practices, based on our experience through participation in several initiatives throughout over two decades. As a proud partner of TOURAL HEU project Polyvios Raxis presented “TOURAL – Empowering Sustainable Tourism Growth of Rural and Remote Areas,” showing how the project’s multidimensional tools help regions integrate cultural heritage into balanced, resilient tourism strategies.

As an active partner in the HEU TOURAL and EMFAF ecoRoute projects that were both presented during IKUWA8, as well as in several other EU and national projects in the Blue Economy sector, Atlantis Consulting continues to work in advancing innovative approaches that combine Cultural Heritage protection with sustainable tourism development and regional growth.
