‘Sail in History’ is a transnational thematic touristic route between Greece and the Ionian coast of Calabria in Southern Italy, which belongs to the Magna Graecia based on the ancient nautical routes. The sailing cruises characterized by a rich offer of cultural and scientific experiences for the participants. In practical terms, during the sailing, and also during the stops in the various harbours, the participants will have the unique opportunity to be involved in exciting scientific experiences related to various disciplines related to the sea and in particular to the history and the culture of the ancient Greece and its Calabrian colonies.
Magna Graecia in Latin, Magna Graecia (or Grande Ellade) in Italian, was the main territory of various Greek colonies in Sicily and South Italy. Those two areas have been a place of great colonial activity of both ancient Greek and Italian civilization, mostly during 6th and 5th century B.C. Both these civilizations have preserved many elements of their ancient Greek tradition and language. Greek colonists’ goal was the dominance in nautical routes rather than the territorial dominance and they developed national, religion and financial relations. The dominant characteristics of the Greek colonists were the establishment of altars in order to be able to exercise their religion as well as the transfer of the main elements of their everyday life and more specific vineyards and olives. Religion, food and wine had an enormous impact at the lives of the inhabitants and the development of the rest European civilization.
The routes of the tourist programme “Sail in History” include 6 locations in Western Greece and 6 locations in the South of Italy. The sites of the tourist programme in Greece are the islands of Corfu and Lefkada, the archaeological site of Ancient Oiniades, the area of Corinth and the well-known Delphi and Olympia. The Italian sites cover the coastal city of Reggio Calabria, the ancient cities of Locri Epizephyrii and Kaulonia, the underwater archaeological area of Punta Scifo in Crotone, the town Le Castella of Isola Capo Rizzuto and the archaeological area Capo Colonna located in Calabria near Crotone.
